The Highback--Too Frou?

My hand-built highback winged bench

I love the look of highback seating.  I especially love a highback bench.  This look, once reserved for restaurateurs and hoteliers, has become popularized in homes.  The highback bench or chair emulates a feel of sleek sophistication.  Adding one creates a refined, dramatic look instantly. The trend has now become so popular that these are no longer exclusive to specialty designer furniture showrooms. There are a plethora of options for the buyer who appreciates this specific style.

I admire the look so much that I opted to build my own (shown above)  as most benches with a scale large enough for my table began at the price of $4000 and up.  You can see the tutorial on my other blog here.

Musical Chairs

Not too long ago, it would have been unheard of to not have a matching dinette set. Not only that, but popular opinion was that the china cabinet, sideboard, table, and chairs all needed to match as well.  Due to the growth in popularity of the flea-market flipper and the DIY decorator, there has been a growing trend of mixing chairs, or 'eclectic' seating.  This trend has become so popular that now  major design houses have gotten into the act by creating their own eclectic collections.  The following are examples of the trend in the pre-fabricated ilk.

Neo Victorian Style

Science fiction and speculative fiction have always been popular.  As of late, however, the genre has exploded!  Neo-Victorianism has expanded so that it has spawned its own sub-genre, the steampunk movement.  In fact, steampunk style has become so popular and it is so mainstream that stores such as Restoration Hardware now offer stylish options.  If you appreciate this genre, you may enjoy my Steampunk-Themed Wedding post on my blog The Bride Ideal.  To view the post, click here.
